Melonpan

what is melonpan?

A Japanese sweet bun with a crisp cookie crust. Ours is a tiramisu melonpan, posted across the UK.

Melonpan is a soft, sweet bun baked under a thin layer of cookie dough, so the top is crisp and the inside stays soft.

It is one of the best known sweet breads in Japan, sold in bakeries and convenience shops across the country.

The cookie layer is scored in a criss-cross before it goes in the oven. As it bakes it sets into a crackled crust with a little crunch, over a light, soft bun.

why is it called melonpan?

Pan is the Japanese word for bread. The melon part is about looks: the domed, scored crust looks like the skin of a melon.

So the name comes from the crust, not the flavour. Ours tastes of tiramisu.
